    • Nearly 80% of US households now own a digital camera
    • Digital photography is now a $3 billion business worldwide

    But the dramatic rise in demand for digital photography and related products also brings huge concerns for consumers.  The problem is that traditional storage, organization, and sharing methods no longer apply to digital photos.

    Problems

    Storage
    Most people today store their digital photos on personal computers or on disks. The immediate issues are

    1) inadequate space

    2) photos are at high risk of being lost or being erased.  What happens when hard drives crash, for example? Or what happens in cases of fire, flood and other disasters?

    Organization
    The arrival of Web 2.0 with features such as tagging potentially makes it easier for users to organize and retrieve their photos. Many, however, find tagging a cumbersome additional step.

    There’s simply no place to put digital photos where you can easily view and organize them.

    Sharing
    Most people share their digital photos through e-mail. Among the limitations of e-mail photo sharing are:

    1) often Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and other providers of email

    • limit the size of e-mail attachments you can send/receive
    • can routinely “junk” your legitimate e-mail and pics for spam

    2) a higher risk of spreading computer viruses, etc.

    To a limited extent, personal P2P file sharing programs and software sharing services (like Pando, Limewire, Shareaza) that allow you to send/receive larger files may help, but here’s the problem:

    For you to share a Pando file, for example, with another person you both have to have the Pando software installed.  For you to share your file with someone else who already uses a different file sharing program, such as Limewire or Shareaza, etc., you’d have to have Limewire, Shareaza, etc. installed.

    Other Problems

    The problems of storage, organization and sharing digital photographs are further compounded by the following factors:

    • Less than 3% of the US population uses a photo sharing website for storage, organization and sharing

    • More than one trillion traditional photos are fading away and are at risk for flood, fire, theft, or other damage.

    Solution

    The current solution to the problem with pictures goes back to the mid to late 1990s when, according to Wikipedia.org, the first photo sharing internet sites came on the scene.  During the early 2000s many more photo sharing sites were started.

    What is online photo sharing?

    Online photo sharing refers to sharing your digital photos with others through an internet site.  It involves uploading your digital photos from a personal computer or camera phone to a website or blog and publishing them.

    Today there are scores of photo sharing sites, as well as other types of sites like social networks, offering a variety of different online photo sharing services.

    Storage

    Online photo sharing greatly reduces the risks and other problems involved with storing digital photos on personal computers or disks. When you upload digital photos to a website or blog, in essence you transfer the files and a copy is stored at the site.

    Most photo sharing sites offer users a free account but only for up to a set amount of storage space. Some other restrictions may apply but you’ll be assessed a fee for storage over and above the set limit.

    Flickr is perhaps the most well known photo sharing sites today. While most other photo sharing sites that impose limits on capacity do so based on amount of space you use, Flickr limits you based on bandwidth usage. A paid Flickr account, however, provides unlimited access.

    On the other hand, Facebook, which is not a photo sharing site but a social network services site, offers free unlimited photo storage services to their members.

    Organization

    Using copy/paste or click/drag, you can easily move around  your online photos and organize them into  different photo albums you create.  You can usually make copies of your photos as well as copies of your online albums. With many services you’re able to lock your albums, if you like, sharing them with only those you choose.

    Sharing

    With your digital photos stored on the web you can easily share your pics and photo albums with anyone you like who has access to the internet. Online photo sharing is far far superior to sharing via e-mail and P2P file sharing.

    Traditional Photos

    Experts have estimated that one trillion traditional photos are now deteriorating and are at risk of being lost or damaged due to flood, fire, earthquake and other unplanned and natural disasters.  In many cases these photos are the only links to our past and to our history.
